Dire Straits – Money For Nothing (US Copy)
Dire Straits – Money For Nothing
Originally released in 1988, Money For Nothing is the definitive Dire Straits greatest hits compilation, bringing together some of the band's most celebrated recordings from their first decade. Issued by Vertigo and Phonogram in the UK and Europe, the 12-track CD spans the group's journey from their blues-influenced beginnings through to the huge international success of Brothers In Arms.
The compilation opens with the unmistakable "Sultans Of Swing", the 1978 breakthrough that introduced Mark Knopfler's distinctive fingerpicked guitar style to a worldwide audience, followed by "Down To The Waterline" from the band's self-titled debut. These early recordings showcase the leaner, rootsier side of Dire Straits, blending blues rock, folk rock and sophisticated guitar playing with Knopfler's characteristically understated vocals.
The collection then moves through some of the band's most enduring songs. "Tunnel Of Love" and "Romeo And Juliet" represent the more expansive, melodic sound of Making Movies, while "Where Do You Think You're Going" revisits the group's earlier period. "Walk Of Life", "Private Investigations" and "Brothers In Arms" demonstrate the remarkable range of Dire Straits during their rise from cult British rock band to global stadium act.
There are also two particularly useful additions for collectors and fans. "Portobello Belle - Live" provides a live version of the song, while "Twisting By The Pool (Remix)" gives the compilation a different take on the band's playful early-1980s sound. "Telegraph Road - Live (Remix)" is another highlight, presented here in an extended 12-minute performance, while the edited 4:05 version of "Money For Nothing" appears alongside the album's other major hits.
For anyone looking for a concise introduction to Dire Straits on CD, Money For Nothing is an essential compilation. With Mark Knopfler's instantly recognisable guitar work at its centre, it covers classic rock, blues rock, folk rock and pop rock while featuring many of the band's best-known songs. A strong addition to any Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler or classic rock CD collection.
