Recorded at Radio Recorders in Hollywood in January 1957, “All Shook Up” was written by Otis Blackwell, with Elvis receiving songwriting credit, and became one of his biggest early successes. The recording features Scotty Moore on guitar, Bill Black on bass, D.J. Fontana on drums and Gordon Stoker on piano, with The Jordanaires providing their distinctive backing vocals.

The song became a phenomenal commercial success, reaching No. 1 in the United States and remaining at the top of the charts for eight weeks. In Britain, “All Shook Up” also reached No. 1, spending seven weeks at the summit of the UK Singles Chart. It ultimately became one of the defining hit singles of 1957 and one of Elvis's signature recordings.

The B-side, “That's When Your Heartaches Begin”, has a very different character. Originally associated with The Ink Spots, Elvis had actually recorded the song during his famous 1953 custom recording session at Sun Records. He returned to it in January 1957, producing a much fuller and more mature interpretation featuring Scotty Moore, Bill Black, D.J. Fontana, Gordon Stoker and The Jordanaires.

The contrast between the two sides makes the single particularly appealing: “All Shook Up” is concise, rhythmic and irresistibly energetic, while “That's When Your Heartaches Begin” is a moody late-night ballad that allows Elvis's vocal phrasing and the Jordanaires' harmonies to take centre stage.
