Two of Joseph Haydn's most famous and instantly recognisable symphonies come together on this classic recording, pairing Symphony No. 94 in G Major, “Surprise” with Symphony No. 101 in D Major, “Clock.” Performed by the North German Radio Orchestra and Vienna Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Leopold Ludwig and Jascha Horenstein, the album showcases Haydn's wit, elegance, rhythmic invention and extraordinary ability to turn the classical symphony into an engaging and entertaining musical form.

Composed in 1791, Symphony No. 94 in G Major, better known as the “Surprise” Symphony, is one of Haydn's most celebrated works. It was written during his highly successful London period, when Haydn was composing for large audiences and adapting his symphonic style to the impressive orchestral forces available to him in England.

The four-movement work begins with the stately Adagio – Vivace Assai, before moving into the famous Andante. The second movement contains the celebrated sudden fortissimo chord traditionally associated with the “surprise” of the symphony, famously designed to catch the attention of listeners who might otherwise have become distracted during the quiet opening theme. The lively Menuet and energetic Finale: Allegro Di Molto complete one of Haydn's most charming and enduring orchestral works.

The album's second major work is Symphony No. 101 in D Major, universally known as the “Clock” Symphony. Also composed during Haydn's London period, the symphony was premiered in London in 1794 and takes its nickname from the distinctive ticking rhythm heard throughout the second-movement Andante.

The “Clock” opens dramatically with Adagio – Presto, contrasting a slow introduction with an energetic and expansive main section. The famous Andante follows, built around its gently pulsing accompaniment which gives the movement its characteristic clock-like quality. A graceful Menuet and Trio provides the third movement before the symphony concludes with the spirited Vivace, demonstrating Haydn's gift for lively orchestral finales.

Together, the two works provide an excellent introduction to Haydn's mature symphonic style. Both demonstrate his ability to combine sophisticated musical construction with humour, memorable themes and unexpected twists - qualities that helped establish him as one of the most important composers of the Classical period.
