HMV Product & Marketing – Educational Recordings

An intriguing piece of vintage educational audio and HMV history, Educational Recordings is a rare 1966 UK sampler issued by The Gramophone Co. Ltd. under catalogue number SLE 3. Rather than being a conventional music release, the record was produced to showcase HMV's educational recording material and is an interesting example of the specialist recordings being marketed by the company during the 1960s.

The record comes from a fascinating period in the history of recorded education, when vinyl records and tape recordings were increasingly being used alongside more traditional teaching methods. HMV's catalogue extended well beyond popular music and classical records, encompassing specialist educational and instructional material. Earlier HMV catalogues, for example, included dedicated educational recordings alongside language and other teaching resources.

Issued under the HMV Product & Marketing name, this sampler is particularly interesting as a piece of record-industry ephemera. Its purpose was promotional as much as functional, providing an introduction to HMV's educational recording catalogue rather than presenting a conventional artist album. The Gramophone Co. Ltd. catalogue records SLE 3 as a 1966 UK release, making it a useful snapshot of HMV's specialist output during the decade.

For collectors, this is the sort of release that sits somewhere between educational record, trade sampler and HMV memorabilia. Specialist and promotional records such as this were produced in comparatively small quantities and were never intended to compete with mainstream pop releases, which makes surviving copies particularly appealing to collectors of obscure British vinyl, HMV history and unusual educational recordings.

The record is also an excellent reminder of just how broad the British record industry had become by the mid-1960s. Alongside the familiar HMV pop and classical catalogue existed a substantial world of specialist recordings designed for schools, institutions, teachers and other educational applications. Educational Recordings offers a small but fascinating window into that lesser-known side of the HMV catalogue.
