Jo Jo Gunne – Jo Jo Gunne
Jo Jo Gunne – Jo Jo Gunne
Jo Jo Gunne is the self-titled 1972 debut album from the Los Angeles rock band Jo Jo Gunne, formed by former Spirit members Jay Ferguson and Mark Andes alongside Andes' brother Matt and drummer William “Curly” Smith. Released on Asylum Records, the album captures the muscular, melodic sound of early-70s American rock, blending hard rock, blues, boogie and the emerging album-oriented rock style.
The band came together in 1971, after Ferguson and Mark Andes departed the pioneering psychedelic rock group Spirit. Ferguson handled lead vocals and keyboards, Matt Andes played guitar, Mark Andes bass, and Curly Smith drums, with all four contributing vocals. The group took its name from a 1958 Chuck Berry song, establishing an immediate connection with the rock ’n’ roll tradition while developing a heavier early-70s sound of their own.
The album opens with “Run Run Run”, the group's best-known song and their major breakthrough single. Driven by a memorable guitar riff, rolling rhythm and Ferguson's distinctive vocal, it became a UK No. 6 hit in 1972 and received substantial airplay on American album-rock radio. The song remains the defining track from Jo Jo Gunne's debut and is an excellent example of the band's combination of accessible songwriting and hard-driving rock.
Alongside the hit single, the album contains a strong selection of bluesy and groove-led rock. “Shake That Fat” and “I Make Love” lean into the band's swaggering, riff-heavy side, while “Babylon” and “99 Days” demonstrate the more melodic, loose-limbed approach that contemporary reviewers identified as one of the group's strengths. Disc magazine's 1972 review singled out “Run Run Run” and “Babylon” in particular, praising the band's infectious hooks and Californian rock character.
The second half of the album broadens the palette further. “Academy Award” has a relaxed boogie feel, while “Take It Easy” and “Flying Home” show the band balancing heavier instrumentation with more melodic songwriting. The record's relatively lean guitar, bass and drums foundation, supported by Ferguson's keyboards and the group's four-part vocal contributions, gives Jo Jo Gunne a direct, unfussy sound that fits comfortably alongside early-70s American rock from artists such as Spirit, Humble Pie, James Gang and Cactus.
Produced by Jo Jo Gunne with additional production from legendary engineer and producer Tom Dowd, the album was recorded and mixed by Chris Hinshaw before Dowd handled the remixing. It reached No. 57 on the US Billboard 200, while its commercial impact was amplified by the success of “Run Run Run”.
For collectors of 1970s American hard rock, Asylum Records, classic rock and blues-influenced rock vinyl, Jo Jo Gunne is an excellent early-70s album. It captures the band's original line-up at its most focused, combining the hit “Run Run Run” with a strong collection of riff-driven album tracks and providing a fascinating link between Spirit's late-60s psychedelic rock and the heavier American rock sound of the 1970s.
