Aha Shake Heartbreak is the acclaimed second studio album from "Kings Of Leon", originally released in 2004 and following the breakthrough of their debut Youth & Young Manhood. Building on the raw, Southern-infused garage rock of their first album, the band developed a tougher, more focused sound here, combining bluesy guitar riffs, driving rhythms, swaggering vocals and a distinctly American rock 'n' roll character. The album was produced by Ethan Johns and Angelo Petraglia.
The album features some of "Kings Of Leon"'s best-known early songs, including "The Bucket", "Four Kicks" and "King Of The Rodeo", all of which were released as singles in the UK. "The Bucket" proved particularly successful, reaching the UK Top 20, while "Taper Jean Girl", "Pistol Of Fire", "Soft" and "Milk" showcase the band's gritty blend of garage rock, Southern rock and alternative rock.
Recorded in 2004, Aha Shake Heartbreak captures "Kings Of Leon" at a pivotal point in their career, before their later move towards the bigger, more polished arena-rock sound of albums such as Only By The Night. The performances remain lean and energetic, with Caleb Followill's distinctive vocals sitting alongside the interplay of Matthew Followill's guitar, Jared Followill's bass and Nathan Followill's drums.
This 13-track CD edition includes the European/UK bonus track "Where Nobody Knows", making it particularly appealing to fans looking for the expanded original-era tracklist. The UK CD was issued through Hand Me Down in 2004, catalogue number HMD39, with "Where Nobody Knows" appearing as track 13.
A strong choice for fans of early-2000s alternative rock, Southern rock revival, garage rock and indie rock, Aha Shake Heartbreak remains one of the key early releases in the "Kings Of Leon" catalogue, packed with short, punchy rock songs and the rough-edged character that defined the band's formative years.
