Ladysmith Black Mambazo – In Harmony

Ladysmith Black Mambazo bring the rich vocal traditions of South Africa to a wide-ranging collection on In Harmony, blending the group's distinctive isicathamiya sound with gospel, soul and contemporary pop influences. Renowned for their intricate vocal arrangements, close harmonies and uplifting performances, the group have played a major role in bringing South African choral music to international audiences.

Rooted in the Zulu choral tradition of isicathamiya, Ladysmith Black Mambazo are celebrated for their precisely interwoven voices, rhythmic bass lines, gentle falsetto parts and powerful collective singing. Their music balances intricate arrangement with an immediate warmth, drawing on themes of faith, community, hope and shared cultural identity. Their international profile grew significantly through their collaboration with Paul Simon on Graceland, introducing their extraordinary vocal style to listeners around the world.

In Harmony showcases the group's versatility through a programme that moves between traditional South African vocal music, spirituals, gospel standards and collaborations with contemporary British pop and soul artists. The appearance of Lighthouse Family on “Once In A Blue Moon” and Des'ree on “Ain't No Sunshine” gives the collection a crossover dimension, bringing together Ladysmith Black Mambazo's unmistakable choral sound with familiar songs and modern pop sensibilities.

The tracklist also features “Imbube”, a title closely associated with the vocal tradition that helped inspire the international standard “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, alongside spiritually charged performances of “Oh Happy Day” and “Amazing Grace (Closer My God To Thee)”. “Nomathemba (Mother Of Hope)” and “Lungisa Indela Yakho (The Path Is Clear)” highlight the group's connection to Zulu-language repertoire, while “Abezizwe '99 (United Nations Together)” reflects the collection's broader message of unity.

Closing the programme is “Inkanyezi Nezazi (The Star And The Wiseman)”, presented here as a video bonus. This additional visual feature makes the release particularly interesting for listeners exploring the group's music beyond audio alone.

An engaging introduction to Ladysmith Black Mambazo's vocal artistry, In Harmony will appeal to fans of South African music, world music, gospel, a cappella singing and vocal harmony, as well as collectors interested in the meeting point between African musical traditions and international pop.
