Beginning quietly with a snare drum pattern and gradually adding instruments, Boléro steadily increases in colour, volume and intensity until its spectacular conclusion. Its extraordinary orchestration provides an opportunity to hear individual instruments emerge from the orchestra one by one.

Alborada Del Gracioso, taken from Ravel's piano suite Miroirs, provides a dazzling contrast. Its Spanish character, intricate rhythms and virtuoso writing are transformed into an orchestral showpiece, full of sharp percussion, colourful instrumental combinations and expressive melodic passages.

The beautiful Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte is one of Ravel's most elegant and evocative compositions. Despite its title—often translated as "Pavane for a Dead Princess"—Ravel described the piece as an imagined pavane that a little princess might have danced to in former times. Its restrained melody and delicate orchestration perfectly demonstrate the composer's gift for creating atmosphere without excessive ornamentation.

The Spanish influence continues with Rapsodie Espagnole, an exuberant four-part orchestral work inspired by Spanish rhythms and musical colours. From the atmospheric opening to the brilliant Feria, Ravel uses the full orchestra to create a vivid musical portrait of Spain, with intricate percussion, woodwind and string writing contributing to its distinctive character.

The album concludes with La Valse, Ravel's extraordinary orchestral depiction of the Viennese waltz. Originally conceived before the First World War but completed in 1920, the work gradually emerges from a dark, mysterious orchestral atmosphere before developing into a swirling and increasingly frenetic waltz. Its transformation from elegance to chaos has often been interpreted in relation to the upheaval of post-war Europe, making it one of Ravel's most fascinating and dramatic orchestral works.
