Mozart – Symphony No. 40 In G Minor / Symphony No. 41 In C Major ('Jupiter')

Two of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's most celebrated symphonies are brought together on this classical recording: the dramatic and instantly recognisable Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, K.550, and the majestic Symphony No. 41 in C Major, K.551, better known as the 'Jupiter' Symphony. Together they showcase the remarkable range of Mozart's mature orchestral writing, moving from the restless intensity of the G minor symphony to the grandeur and brilliance of his final symphonic masterpiece.

The 40th Symphony opens with one of classical music's most recognisable themes in the urgent Molto Allegro. Its four movements balance emotional tension with Mozart's characteristic elegance, from the lyrical Andante and graceful Menuetto to the energetic Allegro Assai. Composed in 1788, it is one of only two Mozart symphonies written in a minor key and is often regarded as one of the defining works of the Classical period.

The Jupiter Symphony, completed in 1788, provides a spectacular contrast. Its opening Allegro Vivace immediately establishes a sense of scale and grandeur, followed by the beautifully lyrical Andante Cantabile and stately Menuetto. The finale, Allegro Molto, is particularly famous for its sophisticated contrapuntal writing, culminating in an extraordinary combination of several themes in the closing section.

This pairing makes an excellent introduction to Mozart's symphonic music, while also appealing to established classical listeners looking for two of the most important works in the orchestral repertoire. Ideal for fans of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and the wider Viennese Classical tradition.
