Paul McCartney – Give My Regards To Broad Street
Paul McCartney – Give My Regards To Broad Street
Originally released on 22 October 1984, Give My Regards To Broad Street is the soundtrack to Paul McCartney's ambitious 1984 musical film of the same name. Produced by George Martin, the album combines newly recorded material with fresh interpretations of songs from McCartney's Beatles, Wings and solo catalogue, creating a distinctive retrospective of his songwriting career. The soundtrack itself reached No. 1 in the UK Albums Chart, making it a major commercial success despite the film receiving a much more mixed reception.
At the heart of the album is "No More Lonely Nights", McCartney's new composition and the record's major single. The song features David Gilmour of Pink Floyd on electric guitar, while its orchestral and studio arrangement was overseen by George Martin. The song was nominated for both a BAFTA and Golden Globe for Best Original Song, and remains one of McCartney's most recognisable solo compositions of the 1980s.
Much of Give My Regards To Broad Street revisits familiar material in newly arranged and recorded versions. Beatles classics including "Yesterday", "Here, There And Everywhere", "Good Day Sunshine", "For No One", "Eleanor Rigby" and "The Long And Winding Road" sit alongside Wings and solo favourites such as "Silly Love Songs", "Wanderlust", "Ballroom Dancing" and "So Bad". The album also introduces the previously unreleased "Not Such A Bad Boy", "No Values" and the extended orchestral piece "Eleanor's Dream".
The project brought together an impressive cast of musicians, with McCartney joined by Ringo Starr, Linda McCartney, Dave Edmunds, Chris Spedding, John Paul Jones, Eric Stewart, Steve Lukather, Jeff Porcaro, Herbie Flowers and others. George Martin's involvement gives many of the Beatles-era compositions an expansive orchestral character, while the performances retain McCartney's melodic pop-rock sensibility.
This CD edition is particularly interesting for collectors because the longer running time allowed the complete versions of several pieces to be presented without the extensive edits required for the original vinyl release. It includes the extended "Eleanor Rigby / Eleanor's Dream", the full "So Bad", the complete "Wanderlust" and "No More Lonely Nights" sequences, plus the CD-exclusive "Goodnight Princess".
For fans of Paul McCartney, The Beatles, Wings, George Martin and classic 1980s pop-rock, Give My Regards To Broad Street offers an unusual snapshot of McCartney revisiting some of his most celebrated songs while creating new arrangements specifically for the film. It is both a soundtrack and a fascinating reworking of material spanning his career from the Beatles era through Wings and his early-1980s solo work.
