Pink Floyd ‎– Ummagumma

Pink Floyd – Ummagumma

One of Pink Floyd’s most adventurous early releases, Ummagumma is a double album originally released in 1969, pairing a live set of psychedelic favourites with a studio disc that ventures into experimental and progressive territory. The contrast between the two halves makes it a fascinating document of the band at a creative turning point, before the more structured sound of their landmark 1970s albums emerged.

The live album captures the group stretching out on “Astronomy Domine”, “Careful With That Axe Eugene”, “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun” and “A Saucerful Of Secrets”. These performances build on the atmospheric tension, extended instrumental passages and dynamic shifts that made Pink Floyd such a compelling live act.

The studio album takes a more unconventional approach, giving each band member space to explore individual ideas. Richard Wright’s four-part “Sysyphus” moves through contrasting instrumental moods, while Roger Waters offers the pastoral “Grantchester Meadows” alongside the experimental sound collage “Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict”. David Gilmour’s “The Narrow Way” develops across three parts, and Nick Mason’s percussion-led “The Grand Vizier's Garden Party” closes the album with a three-part suite.

Released on Harvest and featuring the distinctive, surreal sleeve design by Hipgnosis, Ummagumma is essential listening for fans of early progressive rock, British psychedelia and Pink Floyd’s more exploratory side.
