Greatest Hits III is the third major instalment in "Queen's" Greatest Hits series, originally released in 1999 on Parlophone in the UK and Hollywood Records in the US. Unlike the first two volumes, this collection brings together later Queen recordings, solo material from Freddie Mercury and Brian May, collaborations with other major artists, live performances and selected remixes.

The album opens with "The Show Must Go On", presented here in the live version featuring Elton John, followed by the Rah Mix of "Under Pressure" with David Bowie. Freddie Mercury's collaboration with Montserrat Caballé on "Barcelona" provides another highlight, while Queen's own catalogue is represented by "Too Much Love Will Kill You", "You Don't Fool Me", "Heaven For Everyone", "Las Palabras De Amor" and "Let Me Live".

The collection also reaches beyond the Queen catalogue. Brian May's "Driven By You" and Freddie Mercury's solo recordings "Living On My Own" and "The Great Pretender" sit alongside Queen's later material, while "Somebody To Love" appears as a live performance with George Michael. "Another One Bites The Dust" is represented by the remix featuring Wyclef Jean and Pras, giving the compilation a distinctly late-1990s production touch.

The closing sequence moves through some of Queen's later and post-Freddie recordings, including "No-One But You (Only The Good Die Young)", "These Are The Days Of Our Lives" and the previously non-album "Thank God It's Christmas", originally released as a single in 1984. The recordings represented across the compilation span approximately 1980–1999, making Greatest Hits III a retrospective of Queen's later catalogue as well as the solo and collaborative work surrounding it.
