Released in October 1985, Once Upon A Time was the seventh studio album from Scottish rock band “Simple Minds” and the record that took their ambitious blend of new wave, synthesizers, powerful guitars and expansive rock firmly into the international mainstream. The album reached No. 1 in the UK and No. 10 in the US, spawning four major singles: “Alive And Kicking”, “Sanctify Yourself”, “All The Things She Said” and “Ghost Dancing”.
The album was recorded during 1985, with the final sessions and mixing taking place at Bearsville Studios in New York and Right Track Studios in New York following work at The Townhouse in London. Production was handled by Jimmy Iovine and Bob Clearmountain, giving the band's established atmospheric sound a bigger, more polished and distinctly American rock production. The sessions also featured guest backing vocals from Robin Clark, Michael Been and the Simms Brothers, with additional percussion from Sue Hadjopoulos.
Opening with the dramatic title track, the album moves through a sequence of widescreen 1980s rock songs, from the driving “All The Things She Said” and atmospheric “Ghost Dancing” to the anthemic “Alive And Kicking”. “Sanctify Yourself” and “Come A Long Way” further demonstrate the band's ability to combine synth textures, chiming guitars and huge rhythmic arrangements without losing their distinctive identity.
This original eight-track album is an essential release from Simple Minds' breakthrough period, and a key piece of 1980s new wave, synth-rock and arena rock. Notably, “Don't You (Forget About Me)” was not included on the original album despite becoming the band's major American breakthrough in 1985; the song was recorded for The Breakfast Club soundtrack and was deliberately kept separate from Once Upon A Time.
