Suzanne Vega – Days Of Open Hand
Suzanne Vega – Days Of Open Hand
Suzanne Vega – Days Of Open Hand is the third studio album by the American singer-songwriter, originally released in 1990. Following the critical and commercial success of Solitude Standing, Vega continued to develop her distinctive approach to songwriting, combining literary lyrics, understated vocals and carefully constructed arrangements with a more experimental, atmospheric sound.
Emerging from New York's singer-songwriter scene in the 1980s, Suzanne Vega became known for her precise storytelling, observational lyrics and distinctive, conversational vocal style. Her music drew on folk traditions while incorporating elements of pop, rock and contemporary studio production. Songs such as Luka and Tom's Diner had brought her international recognition, but Days Of Open Hand explored a more intricate and less immediately commercial musical landscape.
Produced by Anton Sanko, with Vega closely involved in shaping the album's sound, Days Of Open Hand balances acoustic textures with layered instrumentation and unusual rhythmic and melodic details. The result is an introspective, carefully arranged record that rewards attentive listening, revealing new details across repeated plays. Its lyrics explore relationships, vulnerability, conflict and the uncertainties of everyday life, continuing Vega's interest in finding emotional significance in seemingly ordinary experiences.
The album opens with Tired Of Sleeping, establishing an atmospheric tone before moving into the tension and social observation of Men In A War. Rusted Pipe and Book Of Dreams demonstrate Vega's ability to create vivid impressions through concise, image-rich writing, while Institution Green offers a more extended musical passage within the album's carefully considered sequence.
Elsewhere, Those Whole Girls (Run In Grace) and Room Off The Street highlight the intimate, narrative-driven qualities that distinguish Vega's songwriting. Big Space and Predictions contribute to the album's reflective, sometimes enigmatic atmosphere, while Fifty-Fifty Chance and the closing track Pilgrimage complete a collection that favours subtlety and detail over straightforward pop formulas.
Although it followed some of Vega's best-known work, Days Of Open Hand stands as an important part of her artistic development, demonstrating her willingness to explore more complex arrangements without losing the clarity and individuality of her songwriting. It will appeal to listeners interested in alternative singer-songwriters, artful folk-pop, literate lyrics and the more adventurous side of late-1980s and early-1990s alternative music.
For fans of Suzanne Vega, contemporary folk, sophisticated pop and thoughtful, lyrically driven songwriting, this CD offers an absorbing listen from an artist whose work combines musical restraint with considerable emotional and literary depth.
