Talk Talk – The Colour Of Spring

Released in February 1986, The Colour Of Spring is the third studio album from British band Talk Talk and a pivotal release in the group's remarkable musical evolution. Moving beyond the synthesiser-driven new wave sound of their earlier records, the album embraces a richer, more organic approach, combining sophisticated art pop, atmospheric rock, jazz influences and increasingly adventurous arrangements.

Led by the distinctive songwriting and expressive vocals of Mark Hollis, with significant creative input from producer and collaborator Tim Friese-Greene, Talk Talk began to develop a musical identity that would eventually lead to the groundbreaking experimental albums Spirit Of Eden and Laughing Stock. The Colour Of Spring occupies a fascinating position between those worlds, retaining the melodic accessibility of the band's earlier work while introducing the subtle textures, spacious production and musical freedom that would define their later recordings.

Produced by Tim Friese-Greene, the album was recorded in London during 1985, principally at Battery Studios and Videosonics. Rather than relying on the synthesiser-heavy arrangements associated with much of early-1980s pop, the record makes extensive use of piano, organ, acoustic instruments, expressive percussion, guitar and brass. An impressive collection of guest musicians contributes to its distinctive sound, including keyboardist Steve Winwood, double bassist Danny Thompson, guitarist Robbie McIntosh and saxophonist David Roach. The arrangements are often intricate but never overcrowded, allowing the individual instruments and Hollis's understated vocal performances room to breathe.

Opening with Happiness Is Easy, the album establishes its atmospheric character through layered instrumentation, subtle rhythmic changes and the striking addition of children's choir vocals. I Don't Believe In You introduces a more immediate pop sensibility, while Life's What You Make It remains one of Talk Talk's most recognisable recordings. Built around an insistent piano-led rhythm, memorable guitar figures and an infectious groove, it became a major international hit and one of the defining songs of the band's career.

The beautifully restrained April 5th reveals the album's more contemplative side, combining delicate piano, atmospheric textures and expressive instrumental passages. On the second side, Living In Another World delivers another major highlight, balancing an expansive arrangement with a memorable melody, soulful harmonica and a powerful vocal performance from Hollis.

Give It Up brings a more rhythmically engaging dimension to the record, while Chameleon Day moves into quieter, more abstract territory, offering a glimpse of the experimental direction the band would pursue more fully on their subsequent albums. The closing composition, Time It's Time, is an expansive and emotionally rewarding finale, gradually building through piano, organ, percussion and choral arrangements into one of the album's most affecting moments.

Commercially, The Colour Of Spring became Talk Talk's most successful studio album, reaching number eight on the UK Albums Chart and introducing their increasingly adventurous music to a much wider audience. Its success demonstrated that thoughtful, musically ambitious songwriting could coexist with mainstream appeal.

An exceptional and influential 1980s album, The Colour Of Spring captures Talk Talk at a crucial creative turning point. Its combination of sophisticated pop melodies, jazz-influenced musicianship, atmospheric production and experimental ambition makes it essential listening for fans of art pop, intelligent new wave, progressive pop and alternative rock.
