The Rolling Stones' self-titled debut album is one of the defining records of the early British R&B and blues-rock explosion. Released in the UK by Decca in April 1964, The Rolling Stones captures the band at their rawest, combining Chicago blues, rhythm & blues, rock & roll and gritty British beat. Recorded at London's Regent Sound Studios in January and February 1964, the album was produced by Andrew Loog Oldham and Eric Easton.
The Stones' deep appreciation for American blues and R&B is immediately apparent, with a selection built around songs associated with artists including Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters and Slim Harpo. The opening Route 66 sets the tone, followed by I Just Want To Make Love To You, Honest I Do, I'm A King Bee and Walking The Dog. The performances are lean, energetic and driven by the interplay between Mick Jagger's vocals and harmonica, Brian Jones and Keith Richards' guitars, Bill Wyman's bass and Charlie Watts' drums.
Alongside the covers are early Rolling Stones originals, most notably Tell Me (You're Coming Back), one of the first Jagger/Richards compositions to appear on an album. Now I've Got A Witness (Like Uncle Phil And Uncle Gene) and Little By Little also showcase the band's developing songwriting and studio personality, with the latter featuring contributions from figures including Phil Spector and Gene Pitney.
For collectors and fans of classic 1960s vinyl, this UK Decca edition is particularly significant. The original LP was issued only in mono and became a major chart success, reaching No. 1 in the UK and remaining there for 12 weeks. Early Decca pressings are also notable to collectors for their different label variations and the changes surrounding Mona / I Need You Baby and the two versions of Tell Me.
