Antonín Dvořák – Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, Heinrich Hollreiser – Symphony No. 9 In E Minor, Op. 95 “From The New World”

Experience one of the most celebrated symphonies in the classical repertoire with Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95, “From the New World”, performed here by the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Heinrich Hollreiser.

Composed in 1893 during Dvořák’s time in the United States, the New World Symphony reflects the composer’s fascination with American musical culture while retaining the distinctive melodies, rhythms and orchestral colours of his Czech heritage. Premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York in December 1893, it quickly became one of Dvořák’s most popular compositions and remains a cornerstone of the Romantic orchestral repertoire.

The opening Adagio – Allegro molto establishes the symphony’s dramatic character before moving into the famous Largo, whose lyrical English horn melody has become one of the most recognisable themes in classical music. The energetic Scherzo molto vivace follows, inspired in part by Longfellow’s poem The Song of Hiawatha, before the symphony reaches its powerful conclusion with the dramatic Allegro con fuoco.

Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” is particularly admired for its combination of sweeping orchestral writing, memorable melodies and contrasting moods. This recording with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and Heinrich Hollreiser offers a compelling interpretation of a work that remains essential listening for anyone exploring Dvořák, Romantic classical music and great symphonies.
