Fine Young Cannibals – Fine Young Cannibals
Fine Young Cannibals – Fine Young Cannibals
Fine Young Cannibals – Fine Young Cannibals is the self-titled debut album from the Birmingham trio, originally released in 1985. Blending sharp-edged British new wave with soul, pop and post-punk influences, the album established Fine Young Cannibals as one of the most distinctive groups to emerge from the UK's mid-1980s alternative scene.
The album opens with "Johnny Come Home", the group's breakthrough single and one of their most recognisable songs. Built around a taut bassline, clipped guitar and Roland Gift's distinctive, soulful vocals, the track perfectly captures the band's ability to combine minimalist new wave arrangements with classic soul influences.
"Couldn't Care More", "Don't Ask Me To Choose" and "Funny How Love Is" continue the album's mixture of rhythmic pop and understated soul, while their striking interpretation of Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds" gives the first side a dramatic finale.
Side two features "Blue", "Move To Work", "On A Promise", "Time Isn't Kind" and "Like A Stranger", demonstrating the breadth of the band's songwriting. Roland Gift's expressive vocal delivery remains the focal point throughout, complemented by the tight musical partnership of David Steele and Andy Cox.
The album arrived during an especially creative period for British alternative pop, and Fine Young Cannibals' combination of post-punk economy, Motown-inspired rhythm, soul vocals and contemporary synth-pop production helped set them apart from many of their contemporaries. Their later international success would make them one of the defining British pop acts of the decade.
For collectors of Fine Young Cannibals, 1980s new wave, British pop, soul, post-punk and alternative music, their debut album remains an essential introduction to the band and includes the classic "Johnny Come Home".
