Living For The City is a 24-track collection showcasing the powerful soul, funk, R&B and rock sound of "Ike & Tina Turner", with much of the material drawn from the recordings that later formed the Golden Empire collection. The programme combines Stevie Wonder's "Living For The City" with Ike Turner originals, Tina Turner compositions and interpretations of songs by artists including The Beatles, Marvin Gaye, Hoyt Axton and Faye Adams.

The title track, "Living For The City", is Ike & Tina's version of Stevie Wonder's socially conscious 1973 composition. Alongside it are "Nutbush City Limits", the Tina Turner-penned classic associated with her childhood hometown, and a broad selection of funk and R&B performances including "Too Much Man For One Woman", "Rockin' & Rollin' Again", "Push", "Golden Empire" and "Bootsey Whitelaw".

Much of this material has an interesting recording history. Several tracks were recorded at Bolic Sound Studios in 1976, during the final period of Ike and Tina's professional partnership, but some remained unreleased until the Golden Empire project was assembled and issued in 1985. The recordings were subsequently remixed and remastered by Carlo Nasi and Don Murray, giving the later collection a distinctly 1980s presentation while preserving performances originating in the mid-1970s.

The track selection also demonstrates the breadth of the Ike & Tina Turner repertoire, moving from soul and funk into rock and R&B standards. "Never Been To Spain", "Shake A Hand", "Sugar Sugar", "Let's Get It On" and "Jesus" sit alongside Ike Turner originals and Tina's more personal material such as "Tina's Prayer". "Mississippi Rolling Stone", "You're Up To Something", "You're Still My Baby" and "If You Want It" add further examples of the duo's later studio work.
