Katherine Jenkins – Believe

Released in 2009, Believe marked an important new chapter for Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins. Her first album for Warner Bros. Records, it was produced by acclaimed musician and producer David Foster and moved further towards contemporary classical crossover, combining Jenkins’ operatic vocal style with pop, film music and modern songs. The album was released in the UK on 26 October 2009 and reached the UK Top 10.

The album deliberately broadens Jenkins’ repertoire. Her interpretation of Evanescence’s "Bring Me To Life" brings a dramatic classical-crossover treatment to the 2003 rock hit, while "Angel" offers a more intimate reading of the Sarah McLachlan song. "Till There Was You", originally written for The Music Man, and Queen’s "Who Wants To Live Forever" sit alongside the Italian-language "Parla Più Piano", the famous love theme from The Godfather.

Believe also features several high-profile collaborations. Andrea Bocelli joins Jenkins on "I Believe", while Dutch violinist André Rieu appears on the original composition "Ancora Non Sai". Trumpeter Chris Botti adds his distinctive sound to Ennio Morricone’s "La Califfa", and Cody Carey appears on the reggae classic "No Woman, No Cry". Jenkins also delivers a graceful interpretation of Édith Piaf’s "La Vie En Rose", adding another international standard to the album.

The repertoire draws on songs and compositions spanning several decades: "Till There Was You" dates from the 1957 musical The Music Man, "La Vie En Rose" originated in the 1940s, "No Woman, No Cry" became associated with Bob Marley in the 1970s, and "Who Wants To Live Forever" was written by Brian May for Queen’s 1986 A Kind Of Magic album and the film Highlander. Jenkins’ 2009 recordings bring these diverse sources together in a polished, orchestral classical-pop setting.
