Mozart – Symphony No. 38 “Prague” · Symphony No. 39

Performed by The Academy of Ancient Music, directed by Christopher Hogwood, with Jaap Schröder

A refined and historically informed interpretation of two of Mozart’s greatest symphonies, this recording by The Academy of Ancient Music under Christopher Hogwood captures the elegance, clarity, and vitality of late 18th-century performance practice. Using period instruments, the ensemble brings a transparency and lightness that reveals the intricate detail and balance at the heart of Mozart’s orchestral writing.

Symphony No. 39 in E-flat major, K. 543, opens with a majestic Adagio introduction before unfolding into music of warmth, grace, and rhythmic vitality. Its flowing Andantino and poised Menuetto lead to a spirited and joyful finale, exemplifying Mozart’s mature symphonic style.

The “Prague” Symphony No. 38 in D major, K. 504, is more dramatic in character, with a grand, expansive opening movement and a deeply expressive Andante. The absence of a traditional minuet lends the work a distinctive structure, culminating in a brilliant and energetic Presto finale.

This recording highlights the contrast and complement between the two symphonies - one noble and expansive, the other dramatic and driven - performed with precision, insight, and a strong sense of historical authenticity.
