Nitin Sawhney – All Mixed Up

A compelling snapshot of early-2000s electronic music, All Mixed Up reimagines the work of British Indian musician, composer and producer Nitin Sawhney through a wide-ranging collection of remixes and DJ-led reinterpretations. Originally released in 2004 on V2, this two-CD set brings together an impressive roster of producers whose approaches span broken beat, deep house, downtempo, drum & bass and experimental electronic music.

Sawhney has built a distinctive musical identity by connecting South Asian influences with jazz, soul, club music and contemporary production. His compositions often balance intricate rhythms and atmospheric arrangements with expressive melodies, creating music that moves comfortably between listening-room intimacy and dancefloor energy. The tracks selected for All Mixed Up provide fertile ground for remixers, with the original material opened up to new rhythmic structures, extended grooves and fresh electronic textures.

The first disc, titled “The Remixes”, features twelve reworkings by an eclectic group of producers. Freeform Five bring their own interpretation to “Homelands”, while Quantic reshapes “Falling” with his characteristic interest in rhythm and global musical influences. Aaron Jerome takes on “The River”, KV5 reworks “Immigrant”, and Atjazz offers another perspective on “Falling”. Seiji’s remix of “Eastern Eyes” adds to the set’s strong connection with the progressive UK club underground.

The selection continues through contrasting treatments of “Rainfall”, “Lately”, “Cold And Intimate” and “Sunset”. Bugz’s “Dirty Bruk Down Mix” draws attention to the broken-beat and bruk sounds circulating through UK dance music at the time, while the versions of “Sunset” by MJ Cole and London Elektricity demonstrate the range of approaches represented here. The disc closes with Joe Claussell’s extended interpretation of “Moonrise”, rounding out a sequence that rewards listeners interested in the detail and variation of electronic remix culture.

The second disc, “Exclusive Nitin Sawhney Mix”, shifts the emphasis from individual remixes to a continuous DJ-style selection assembled by Sawhney himself. Featuring material associated with artists and remixers including Bugz, Quantic, Fink, Landslide, Ges-E and Ojos de Brujo, it provides a complementary perspective on the sounds and collaborations surrounding the project. Together, the two discs offer both a collection of standalone reworkings and a more flowing listening experience.

For fans of Nitin Sawhney, this compilation highlights the adaptability of his compositions and the creative possibilities that emerge when they are placed in the hands of different producers. It will also appeal to listeners exploring the interconnected worlds of UK electronica, broken beat, deep house, downtempo and drum & bass from the early 2000s. The range of contributors makes All Mixed Up an engaging document of a period when genre boundaries were fluid and remix culture was an important meeting point for musicians, DJs and underground dance scenes.
