Pink Floyd – The Wall
Pink Floyd – The Wall
Originally released in November 1979, The Wall is Pink Floyd's landmark eleventh studio album and one of the most ambitious concept albums in rock history. Conceived primarily by Roger Waters, the story follows the fictional character Pink as emotional isolation, trauma, alienation and the pressures of fame lead him to construct a metaphorical wall between himself and the outside world. Produced by Bob Ezrin, David Gilmour and Roger Waters, with James Guthrie as co-producer, the album combines Pink Floyd's progressive-rock sound with theatrical storytelling, orchestration, dialogue and recurring musical themes.
The first disc opens with the dramatic “In The Flesh?” before moving through “The Thin Ice”, “Another Brick In The Wall (Part 1)”, “The Happiest Days Of Our Lives” and the iconic “Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)”. The latter became one of Pink Floyd's most recognisable recordings and topped both the UK and US singles charts. Other highlights include “Mother”, “Goodbye Blue Sky”, “Young Lust”, “One Of My Turns” and “Don't Leave Me Now”, developing the increasingly fractured narrative surrounding Pink.
The second disc continues the story with “Hey You”, “Is There Anybody Out There?”, “Nobody Home”, “Vera” and “Bring The Boys Back Home”, before reaching two of the album's most celebrated tracks: “Comfortably Numb” and “Run Like Hell”. The dramatic final sequence of “Waiting For The Worms”, “Stop” and “The Trial” brings Pink's psychological journey towards its conclusion, while “Outside The Wall” provides the album's deliberately understated closing statement.
The Wall also marked one of Pink Floyd's most elaborate collaborations with outside musicians and artists. Gerald Scarfe created the album's distinctive artwork and illustrations, while Bob Ezrin and James Guthrie played major roles in developing its expansive production. The album was subsequently adapted into the 1982 film Pink Floyd The Wall, directed by Alan Parker and starring Bob Geldof as Pink.
For collectors of Pink Floyd, progressive rock, classic rock and concept albums, this double-CD edition presents the complete 26-track The Wall across two discs. It remains a central album in Pink Floyd's catalogue, alongside The Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals, and an essential example of the band's ability to combine ambitious rock music with narrative and theatrical ideas.
