A wonderful collection of some of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's most famous ballet music, Tchaikovsky Ballet Suites brings together highlights from three masterpieces of the Romantic orchestral repertoire: The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty. Next comes a selection from Swan Lake, Op. 20, Tchaikovsky's first ballet. Originally premiered in 1877, Swan Lake tells the tragic story of Prince Siegfried and Odette, a princess transformed into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse. The music ranges from dramatic orchestral passages to some of Tchaikovsky's most beautiful dance melodies, including the celebrated Waltz, Dance Of The Swans, Czardas, Spanish Dance, Neapolitan Dance and Mazurka.

The final section is devoted to The Sleeping Beauty, Op. 66, which premiered in 1890 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements of classical ballet. The selection opens with the atmospheric Introduction – The Lilac Fairy, followed by the elegant Pas D'action, Panorama, famous Waltz and triumphant Finale. Tchaikovsky's refined orchestration and graceful melodic writing are particularly evident throughout this later masterpiece.

From the sparkling celesta of The Nutcracker to the dramatic sweep of Swan Lake and the elegance of The Sleeping Beauty, this collection provides an excellent introduction to Tchaikovsky's ballet music.
