Sly & The Family Stone – Fresh

Sly & The Family Stone – Fresh

Originally released in 1973, Fresh captures Sly & The Family Stone refining their groundbreaking blend of funk, soul and psychedelic experimentation into a leaner, rhythmically inventive sound. Following the darker, more introspective atmosphere of There's a Riot Goin' On, the album brings renewed movement and clarity to the group's music without sacrificing its distinctive edge.

Led by the visionary Sly Stone, the band helped redefine American popular music by bringing together funk rhythms, gospel-inflected vocals, rock energy and an integrated ensemble sound. Their music crossed musical and cultural boundaries, influencing generations of funk, soul, hip-hop and alternative artists. On Fresh, bass and drums take a particularly prominent role, creating deep, elastic grooves around layered keyboards, guitar, horns and the group's unmistakable vocal interplay.

The album opens with “In Time”, an extended funk workout built around an insistent rhythmic pulse, before moving into “If You Want Me To Stay”, one of Sly & The Family Stone's best-known songs. Its relaxed delivery and tightly controlled groove demonstrate the band's ability to make sophisticated rhythmic music feel effortless. “Let Me Have It All” and “Frisky” continue the album's playful, syncopated approach, while “Thankful N' Thoughtful” brings a more reflective mood.

Elsewhere, “Skin I'm In” combines muscular funk with a searching vocal performance, and “I Don't Know (Satisfaction)” keeps the rhythm section firmly in the foreground. The group's inventive interpretation of “Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)” transforms a familiar standard into something darker and more hypnotic, making it one of the album's most distinctive moments. The closing tracks, “If It Were Left Up To Me” and “Babies Makin' Babies”, round out a set that balances infectious grooves with the more complex, socially aware sensibility that runs through Sly Stone's work.

This CD edition also includes five bonus tracks featuring alternate mixes and an alternate version of songs from the original album. These additional recordings offer a further perspective on the arrangements and performances, making the expanded release especially appealing to listeners interested in the creative process behind this influential funk record.

A key entry in the Sly & The Family Stone catalogue, Fresh is essential listening for fans of classic funk, psychedelic soul, deep grooves and rhythm-led production. It also deserves attention from collectors exploring the foundations of modern R&B, hip-hop sampling and the evolution of groove-based popular music.
