Yes – The Yes Album

Yes – The Yes Album is the landmark third studio album from the pioneering British progressive rock band, originally released in 1971. It was the first Yes album to feature guitarist Steve Howe, whose intricate playing and acoustic/electric versatility became a defining part of the band's classic sound.

Following the more experimental beginnings of their first two albums, The Yes Album saw Yes develop the ambitious, expansive approach that would make them one of progressive rock's most important bands. The album combines extended compositions, intricate musicianship, shifting rhythms and richly layered arrangements, while still retaining memorable melodies and strong vocal harmonies.

The opening "Yours Is No Disgrace" immediately establishes the album's scale, with Steve Howe's guitar work interacting with Chris Squire's distinctive bass, Bill Bruford's complex drumming and Jon Anderson's unmistakable vocals. At over nine minutes, it remains one of the band's defining early progressive rock pieces.

The acoustic instrumental "The Clap", written by Howe, provides a striking contrast before the three-part "Starship Trooper" unfolds through "Life Seeker", "Disillusion" and the celebrated "Würm" section. The track's combination of acoustic textures, vocal harmonies and extended instrumental passages became a template for much of Yes's later work.

Side two opens with "I've Seen All Good People", one of Yes's most recognisable songs. Its first section, "Your Move", blends Anderson's intricate vocal writing with acoustic guitar before moving into the more driving "All Good People".

The album closes with "A Venture" and the expansive "Perpetual Change", another showcase for the band's remarkable interplay and progressive ambitions.

The Yes Album proved to be a major breakthrough for the band and established the core line-up that would go on to create albums such as Fragile and Close To The Edge. It remains an essential record for collectors of Yes, progressive rock, classic British rock and 1970s vinyl.
